Backpacks, Binders, and Books! Oh My!!

Every year without fail I'm amazed at the cost of sending my children to a free public school.

I took only Gavin shopping yesterday. I was thinking that after all the attention Logan has been getting Gavin could use some alone time with Mom. He was super excited to say the least.

I had the list from his school in hand as we headed to Wal-Mart. Afew of the items on the list seemed ridiculous to me.

1- a reem of white copy paper.
ARE YOU SERIOUS? Schools no longer provide the neccessary amount of paper?
2- 4 Boxes of crackers.
What happened to sending you OWN kid to school with a snack every day?
3- 6 (yes SIX) boxes of 24 pencils.
Really? Isn't that a bit excessive for every child to bring 144 pencils to class? Say there are only 20 students in the class.... that's 2,880 PENCILS!!!
4- Hand Sanitizer (and they specifically asked for it to be over so many ounces!)
While I can appreciate a need to cut down on the spread of germs... Are we no longer teaching proper handwashing? That's gross! **getting on my soap box**
Hand sanitizer does NOT CLEAN HANDS! It merely kills the germs that reside there, and only if used properly, wich most children DON'T! All the dirt and grime is still left behind.

The rest of his list was fairly common items.

I also had to buy him two pairs of shoes. It rains here a lot (surprised?) so it's necessary to let shoes dry out so they don't get too stinky. I did great on prices, getting out of the shoe store for $60!

Next week, it's Logan's turn. Logan, who's school has a ban on.... backpacks!

Busy Day

Well, not too busy. I guess I really can't complain. I'm so lucky that Dustin is able to spend so much time at home right now! It's great to have help with Logan's IV infusions and everything else.

I got to sleep in again today- what a treat! I putzed around for a while and then lounged in bed listening to the rain while I read a book aloud to Dustin. Who says only kids should be read to? I love listening to stories, voices can be so soothing.

Then I fnally got ready for the day and headed back to the hospital. Days have seemed to blurr together- I'm there so MUCH! Again not complaining, I have much to be thankful for. It's only a 5 minute drive to the hospital. We have super helpful doctors and nurses and I wouldn't trade this for anything. Just the assurance that they are there (and no $ involved) is so awesome!

Logan was feeling worse today. I barely got him out of bed to make it to the appointment on time. I almost dropped him at the curb while I parked the car. I wasn't sure he'd be able to make the walk into the office. He shivered the entire time. He even fell asleep on the exam table while the doctor was talking to me. We did get some anti nausea medicine to help his appetite.

Doctor is 99% certain this is swine flu(H1N1) we're dealing with. So now we wait, and treat the symptoms the best we can. I am a bit worried tonight though.

Logan has slept through every single night time infusion we've done, but tonight everytime I go in he mumbles to me incoherently. He's drenched in sweat, so I hope it's just the fever breaking that has him acting strange. He's never been a sleep talker.

I made some super yummy oreo truffles today. I saw the recipe on a friends blog and had to try them, making a special trip to the store just to get the required ingrediants. Needless to say they are super easy and were a big hit! Even Logan had one.

Lately I'm feeling the need to harness my creativeness, but can't pin down any one thing I want to do. Weird I know. I have a never ending supply of half finnished projects, but none are fulfilling the desires right now. Maybe the rain will cooperate tomorrow and I can .... never mind- quarantined kid. No outside activities for a couple weeks.

So that's basically everything. I'm hoping life will slow down a bit- right in time for school to start back up. I question how I ever worked full time for so long... this feels like a full time job in itself.

Oink Oink

Looks like Logan has swine flu.

Yep.

No joke.

We are SUPER excited!

Fingers Crossed!!

Logan started running a fever today. I spoke with the home health nurse and she said to watch him.

She didn't seem too concerned, figuring it was just viral. He's already on two of the strongest IV antibiotics there are. She also didn't seem too worried about the actual PICC site being infected.

I- however am the Mom, and it is my responsibility to worry. He has no other symptoms than a fever.

How high is it you ask? Great question... I don't know. Haven't been able to unearth the thermometer yet.

It goes away with tylenol but after about 3 hours it resurfaces slowly, bringing with it lots of chills and body aches.

My web MD doctorate certificate doesn't qualify me diagnosing a post surgery child on IV antibiotics through a PICC line.

If I had to make an educated guess I'd say he picked up something viral while at the hospital last friday for his check up. It's the something that has me worried.

What if it's something icky like swine flu??? That would be my luck. His poor little immune system is shot. You'd think all the antibiotics would make him stronger, but I'm not seeing it this time arround. He still seems so weak and frail.

I'd really like to avoid the germ filled doctors office if at all possible. I refuse to go the ER tonight- germ central. For some reason I think they'd re-admit him if I did.

Maing things worse, I feel like we have a new baby in the house. This round the clock infusion schedual has me up at all hours, getting a few hours of fragmented sleep.

Realisticly I know that I need to become familiar with this routine as it will only increase in frequency as Logan gets older and the infections become more severe and more often. Not something I usually choose to think about but when it's 12:30 in the morning and I know I'll be up another hour at least, my mind tends to go there.

Loving It

It's interesting to me how well I've taken to the weather here. I was worried I may not like the constant foggy grey days. However I love them.

It's so relaxing to watch the drizlly rain out the window while feeling warm and cozy inside. It's still warm enough to leave a few windows open so the fresh smell of rain can linger in the house.

It makes me want to bake, and cook and clean. The flowers in the back yard provide a great contrast to the dark day making them stand out so nicely. It's the perfect day for a bubble bath, sweat pants, and snuggling on the couch with hubby while I read a good book.

I absolutely love it here!
